Imagine this: Thousands of students, lights, music, and an arena buzzing with energy! That's the Schools Spectacular, an annual event where the spotlight shines not just on the performers, but also on the unsung heroes behind the scenes. This year, at Qudos Bank Arena, a staggering 6,000 public school students took center stage, captivating an audience with their talent. But here's where it gets really interesting: while the performers dazzled, over 150 vocational education and training (VET) students were busy showcasing their technical prowess.
These dedicated Year 11 and 12 students traveled from all corners of the state to immerse themselves in the world of live production. They were the masterminds behind the cameras, the audio engineers shaping the sound, the lighting technicians painting the stage with color, and the production, styling, and costume teams ensuring every detail was perfect. They even ran the popular tiny café!
Karabar High School took the lead, with 11 students gaining invaluable hands-on experience. One of them, Jack Merton, worked as a vision specialist, operating a camera for the IMag screens, bringing the performances to life for the entire arena.
Jack shared his enthusiasm, stating that his Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services offered a fun, interactive break from academics, allowing him to get hands-on with equipment and learn the cool stuff. He was immersed in all the cameras, witnessing the large-scale technical aspects of the show.
Accompanying Jack was Stephen Barrett, Karabar High School's music and entertainment teacher, who served as the 2IC for the Schools Spectacular's student production team. Mr. Barrett highlighted the importance of VET in preparing students for the industry, allowing them to hit the ground running through work placements like the Schools Spectacular.
He emphasized that the students not only build their skills but also work on a world-class event, learning from industry professionals. Mr. Barrett also pointed out that VET offers a pathway for every student, whether they aspire to be mechanics, carpenters, graphic designers, or work in live entertainment.
Students also had the opportunity to learn from industry leaders like Eclipse Sound & Vision, which provided all the technical equipment for SpecFest, the entertainment hub hosted outside the Schools Spectacular and run almost entirely by VET students.
Nicole Neal, director and vision switcher from Eclipse, praised the students' enthusiasm and the unique training environment. She explained that SpecFest provides a unique setting with a 100% student-operated broadcast to the screens, offering students the chance to explore the industry and connect with professionals.
Minister for Skills, TAFE, and Tertiary Education Steve Whan, was thrilled to meet with students from Karabar High School. He highlighted the dedication and skill of the VET students, who helped create an unforgettable experience and train for future careers in the entertainment industry.
He emphasized the value of these hands-on experiences in preparing young people for real careers, opening doors to an exciting and dynamic sector. The NSW Department of Education proudly supports programs like Schools Spectacular and SpecFest, which provide students with essential vocational skills and career opportunities.
