Course of Fate – Behind the Eclipse Album Review | Progressive Metal Evolution (2026)

After a 17-year wait, Norwegian progressive metal band Course of Fate has released their debut full-length, 'Mindweaver'. Now, three albums in since 2020, the band is back with 'Behind the Eclipse'. I was excited to hear this album, as I missed their sophomore release in 2023. The album 'Mindweaver' was a delightful surprise, and I was eager to see what the band would do next. And here's where it gets controversial... While I was initially impressed with 'Mindweaver', I was surprised to find that 'Behind the Eclipse' is even more aggressive and impactful. The band's core sound, a heavy backdrop supported by lush drumming and memorable riffs, is still there, but it's been taken to a new level. The guitars of Kenneth Henriksen and Fredrik Jacobsen are louder and rougher, and the bass of Torstein Guttormsen is fully audible throughout the album. The band's songwriting is also more aggressive, with the odd growl thrown in for good measure. But here's the catch... While the album is impressive, there are a few moments where the balance of aggression and melancholy doesn't quite come together. 'Sky Is Falling' is a fine song, but it's a little too strong for my tastes, and 'Hiding from the Light' takes a slower approach that initially had me wondering if the band had some metalcore influences. However, the album is still a well-written, cathartic, and empowering listen. The band's strong performances and great songwriting make it hard to lose interest at any point. So, is 'Behind the Eclipse' a great album? I'd say it's a solid 3.5/5.0. It's a fun listen and a great addition to the band's discography. But will it stand the test of time? That's for you to decide. And this is the part most people miss... So, what do you think? Is 'Behind the Eclipse' a masterpiece or a mere good metal album? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
