Pakistan Crushed by India in T20 World Cup: Hesson Reacts (2026)

A crushing defeat for Pakistan's cricket team has left the players feeling the pain, according to head coach Mike Hesson. The T20 World Cup Group A match against arch-rivals India in Colombo was a tough pill to swallow, with Pakistan suffering a 61-run loss.

India, the defending champions, dominated the game from the get-go. Despite some initial concerns over the match's fate, the Pakistan government gave the green light for the team to play just days before the match. And play they did, posting a competitive total of 175 runs after being sent in to bat first on a tricky pitch at the R. Premadasa stadium.

"The dressing room is filled with disappointment," Hesson said. "The players know how much this match means to Pakistan. We had a great run, winning five games in a row before today, but India outplayed us."

Ishan Kishan's brilliant innings of 77 runs, supported by Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube, helped India recover from an early dismissal of opener Abhishek Sharma. Pakistan's top-order crumbled under pressure, losing three wickets for just 13 runs, with Jasprit Bumrah striking twice in the second over. Usman Khan's 44 runs were not enough to save Pakistan, as they were bowled out in 18 overs, recording their third-lowest total against India in T20 history.

Hesson defended his decision to bowl first, citing the spinning ball and a good initial start. However, he acknowledged that Kishan's performance took the game away from Pakistan. "The way Kishan played, he was exceptional and took control of the game," Hesson added.

India's victory, their third in a row, secured their place in the Super Eights stage, while Pakistan now face a must-win situation against Namibia on Wednesday. The defeat further highlights Pakistan's poor record against India in World Cup matches, with a win-loss ratio of 1-8.

"We need to pick ourselves up quickly and focus on our next game," Hesson said. "We've shown good form leading up to this World Cup, and we're confident we can turn things around."

India's vice-captain, Axar Patel, praised Kishan's performance, calling it "one of the gear knocks" on a turning wicket. Kishan's knock included 10 fours and three sixes, a remarkable display of batting skill. "The way he handled the tricky conditions was sensational," Patel said. "It's a challenging wicket, with the ball spinning and some deliveries going straight under the lights."

Kishan, the wicket-keeper-batsman, has scored two half-centuries in three games so far in the competition. His recent recall to the team after a two-year hiatus has paid dividends, with a century against New Zealand in a T20 international just a fortnight ago. "His form and confidence are sky-high," Patel added. "He's a talented player who can score all around the ground."

The defeat for Pakistan adds fuel to the fire in one of cricket's most intense rivalries. With the World Cup still in its early stages, both teams will look to bounce back and prove their worth on the global stage.
