Supercars Series 2026: Tweaks to Finals Rules and Points System
The Supercars Series is set to make some exciting changes to its Finals Series for 2026, building on the success of the 2025 format. The series will continue to divide its calendar into a Sprint Cup, Enduro Cup, and a three-round Finals Series, with some key adjustments to the points system and race structure.
Key Changes and Benefits:
Enhanced Points Structure: The bonus points system is being expanded, with a larger spread of points awarded ahead of the Grand Final. This year, only 50 bonus points were given to the leader after Sandown, but next year, the distribution will be 150-120-96-78, aligning with the bonuses awarded after Bathurst and the Gold Coast. This change adds more incentive for drivers to perform well throughout the season.
Revised Elimination Process: Drivers who are eliminated from the Finals Series will now revert to the points they finished on after the Bathurst 1000, plus any points accrued in subsequent rounds. This means that eliminated drivers can be overtaken by non-finalists, creating a more dynamic and competitive championship.
Tie-Breaking Rules: New rules will clarify how Sprint Cup and Enduro Cup standings are handled in the event of a tie. Race wins will break ties in the Sprint Cup, while ties in the Enduro Cup will be resolved based on the highest finishing position in the Bathurst 1000.
Maintaining Intensity and Fairness:
Supercars motorsport boss Tim Edwards assured fans that these changes are minor refinements, not substantial alterations. The series aims to maintain the intensity and excitement introduced in 2025, with drivers pushing harder in the Finals rounds due to the potential to win the championship. The controversial first-lap incident between Ryan Wood and Broc Feeney, which led to engine trouble for Feeney, did not deter Edwards from the Finals concept, emphasizing that racing involves pushing limits.
Community Engagement and Discussion:
The introduction of these changes invites further discussion and engagement from fans and drivers alike. The series encourages feedback and invites fans to share their thoughts on the new rules, ensuring a transparent and inclusive approach to rule-making.
